Matrade Partners CBI to Boost Malaysian SMEs with European Market Intelligence via MDTP Platform

PETALING JAYA — Malaysia’s trade promotion agency has taken a major step toward strengthening the global competitiveness of local businesses by forging a strategic collaboration with a European trade body to enhance access to market intelligence.

The Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation has teamed up with Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries to integrate European market insights directly into the Madani Digital Trade Platform (MDTP), a move aimed at supporting Malaysian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in expanding into international markets.

Empowering SMEs Through Data-Driven Insights

Matrade chief executive officer Abu Bakar Yusof said the initiative is designed to provide Malaysian exporters with reliable and high-quality market intelligence, enabling them to make informed decisions when entering European markets.

He noted that access to such data is critical for SMEs seeking to position themselves in niche and value-added segments, which often require a deeper understanding of consumer trends, regulatory requirements and competitive dynamics.

The integration of these resources into MDTP is expected to strengthen the overall export readiness of Malaysian businesses.

Strategic Role of CBI in Sustainable Trade Development

CBI, which operates under the Dutch government’s enterprise framework and is tasked by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, plays a key role in promoting sustainable trade between developing countries and Europe.

Its programmes focus on equipping SMEs with the knowledge and tools necessary to meet European standards, improve product quality and enhance market access.

Through training, advisory services and research, CBI supports businesses in navigating complex export environments while encouraging sustainable practices.

Comprehensive Resources for Market Expansion

As part of the collaboration, Malaysian businesses will gain access to a wide range of resources, including approximately 250 market studies, 30 news updates and 25 webinars produced annually by CBI.

These materials cover key sectors such as agriculture, consumer goods and services, offering detailed insights into market trends, demand patterns and emerging opportunities.

CBI representative Edouard van der Haas said the partnership aligns with the organisation’s mission to strengthen the social and environmental sustainability of SMEs.

He added that the initiative also aims to create quality employment opportunities and support the empowerment of women and youth within the business ecosystem.

Addressing Information Gaps in Export Markets

One of the primary challenges faced by SMEs is the lack of access to timely and accurate market information.

The collaboration seeks to bridge this gap by providing comprehensive data and analysis on European market conditions, including regulatory requirements, consumer preferences and industry developments.

This information will be delivered through MDTP, positioning the platform as a central hub for business support and international trade facilitation.

Seamless Integration Enhances User Experience

The integration leverages iframe technology, allowing a streamlined version of CBI’s market intelligence platform to be embedded directly within MDTP.

This enables users to access extensive research and insights without leaving the platform, improving efficiency and ease of use.

The approach reflects a broader effort to digitise trade support services and enhance accessibility for Malaysian businesses.

Driving Sustainable and Inclusive Growth

The partnership underscores a shared commitment to promoting sustainable trade practices and inclusive economic growth.

By equipping SMEs with the tools and knowledge needed to compete globally, the initiative aims to strengthen Malaysia’s export ecosystem while supporting broader development goals.

As global markets become increasingly competitive, access to high-quality information and strategic partnerships will be essential for businesses seeking to expand beyond domestic borders.

The collaboration between Matrade and CBI represents a forward-looking step in this direction, providing Malaysian SMEs with the resources needed to navigate international markets with greater confidence and capability.
