Man Linked to ‘Lucas Liam’ Account Detained Over Insult Post Targeting Selangor Sultan

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 — Malaysian police have detained a man in connection with a social media post allegedly insulting Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director M. Kumar said the suspect, believed to be in his 30s, was arrested at about 7.10pm in Bukit Mertajam, Penang.

The arrest was carried out through a joint operation involving the CID, Penang police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

Police believe the suspect is linked to a Facebook account under the name “Lucas Liam,” which allegedly uploaded the offensive content on May 2.

During the operation, officers seized two Samsung mobile phones along with SIM cards believed to have been used to publish the post.

Authorities have received a total of 12 police reports nationwide regarding the incident.

The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

If convicted, the suspect faces a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment of up to three years, or both.

Police are expected to apply for a remand order to facilitate further investigations.
