Malaysia–Hungary Scholarship Programme Renewed, 40 Fully Funded Slots Offered Annually

PETALING JAYA: Educational ties between Malaysia and Hungary have been strengthened with the renewal of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship programme, offering 40 fully funded places annually to Malaysian students.

The renewed agreement, which will run from 2026 to 2028, is part of ongoing efforts to expand global education opportunities and enhance human capital development.

Higher Education Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to equipping students with international exposure and competitive skills.

He noted that studying abroad provides not only academic benefits but also broader perspectives and cultural understanding, which are essential in an increasingly globalised world.

“This programme enables Malaysian students to experience high-quality international education, helping to prepare them for future challenges,” he said.

Comprehensive Support for Multiple Study Levels

Under the programme, Malaysian students can pursue studies in Hungary at undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels.

The scholarships provide full financial support, covering tuition fees, living allowances, accommodation, and health insurance throughout the duration of study.

This comprehensive funding structure ensures that students from diverse backgrounds can access international education without financial constraints.

The MoU was finalised following a courtesy visit by Hungary’s ambassador to Malaysia, Sándor Sipos, to the Ministry of Higher Education.

The agreement was signed by the ministry’s secretary-general, Datuk Dr. Anesee Ibrahim, on behalf of Malaysia, while Hungary was represented by Sipos.

High Demand Reflects Growing Interest

The Stipendium Hungaricum programme continues to attract strong interest among Malaysian students, with around 350 applications received for just 40 available slots in the previous intake.

This high level of competition underscores the growing demand for fully funded international education opportunities.

Beyond individual benefits, the programme also strengthens bilateral relations between Malaysia and Hungary, particularly in higher education and research collaboration.

It creates opportunities for universities in both countries to expand academic partnerships, including joint research initiatives and knowledge exchange.

Education analysts view the initiative as a key step in preparing Malaysia’s future workforce to thrive in a global environment, while enhancing the country’s position in the international education landscape.
