High Court Hands 30-Year Jail Terms to Family Members of Ulu Tiram Police Station Attacker

KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 — The High Court has imposed lengthy prison sentences on two family members of the Ulu Tiram police station attacker, underscoring the seriousness of terrorism-related offences in Malaysia.

Judicial Commissioner Nurulhuda Nur’aini Mohamad Nor sentenced Radin Imran Radin Mohd Yassin, 64, and his son Radin Romyullah, 36, to 30 years’ imprisonment each after both entered guilty pleas to multiple charges linked to extremist activities.

Radin Imran was convicted on four counts, including propagating violent ideology, supporting the militant organisation Daesh, possessing firearms connected to terrorist activities and keeping related materials. He received 30-year sentences for three of the charges and an additional three-year term for the fourth, with all sentences to run concurrently.

Radin Romyullah was found guilty of pledging allegiance to Daesh and storing digital materials associated with the group. He was sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment, alongside a concurrent three-year term.

The attacker’s mother, Rosna Jantan, 61, was also jailed for four years after admitting to failing to report information related to extremist ideology to authorities.

The court ordered that all sentences take effect from May 17, 2024, the date of their arrest.

Meanwhile, two other accused — Farhah Sobrina, 25, and Mariah, 20 — were acquitted and discharged of charges involving the withholding of information.

In her ruling, Nurulhuda emphasised that the offences were of a grave nature, noting that the case was directly linked to an incident that resulted in loss of life.

She acknowledged that the guilty pleas contributed to expediting court proceedings, but stressed that such admissions could not significantly mitigate punishment in cases involving threats to national security.

“This case illustrates how extremist ideology can translate into real-world violence with devastating consequences,” she said.

The Ulu Tiram police station attack on May 17, 2024 claimed the lives of two police personnel — Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, 22, and Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, 24 — while Corporal Mohd Hasif Roslan, 38, sustained injuries. The assailant was shot dead during the confrontation.

During mitigation, the defence sought lighter sentences, arguing that the offences were ideological in nature and that the accused could be rehabilitated.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Mustaffa P Kunyalam argued that the acts went beyond passive involvement, describing them as serious offences that posed significant threats to public safety and national security.

The prosecution further revealed that Radin Romyullah had harboured intentions of carrying out large-scale attacks, reflecting the depth of radicalisation within the group.

The court’s decision sends a clear message on the firm stance against terrorism-related activities and reinforces the importance of safeguarding public safety.
