Global Supply Crisis Begins to Impact Local Prices as Cost Adjustments Become More Evident — Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir
KUALA LUMPUR: The effects of the global supply crisis are increasingly being felt across Malaysia’s domestic economy, with rising pressures now filtering into transportation, logistics, and everyday consumer prices, signalling a more pronounced phase of cost adjustment.
Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said recent monitoring of selected food prices for the period from April 13 to 19, 2026, revealed mixed price movements across different categories.
He explained that the uneven trends indicate that supply pressures are not uniform, but instead vary depending on several underlying factors, including weather conditions, agricultural input costs, transportation expenses, and short-term fluctuations in supply.
“These mixed price movements reflect the complexity of supply chains, where each category is influenced by different cost drivers and external conditions,” he said during a special briefing on the global supply crisis, which was broadcast live on local television.
According to the data, the average price of standard chicken rose by 2.8 per cent, increasing from RM9.09 per kilogramme to RM9.33 per kilogramme, highlighting cost pressures within the livestock supply chain.
In contrast, beef prices declined by 5.0 per cent to RM35.65 per kilogramme, while the price of Grade C eggs remained stable at an average of RM3.66 per 10 eggs.
For the fish and vegetable segments, the price of mackerel decreased to RM16.43 per kilogramme from RM17.08, while mustard greens saw an increase from RM5.89 to RM6.21 per kilogramme.
Meanwhile, green spinach prices remained unchanged at RM5.26 per kilogramme during the monitoring period.
Akmal noted that these variations underscore the fact that the impact of the global supply crisis is uneven, with different sectors responding differently to supply and cost pressures.
He added that the government will continue to closely monitor price developments and implement appropriate measures to ensure supply stability and mitigate the burden on consumers.
“Despite external pressures, efforts are ongoing to maintain the resilience of domestic supply chains and ensure that essential goods remain accessible,” he said.
In a broader context, he highlighted that global uncertainties, including geopolitical tensions and disruptions in international logistics, are contributing to rising costs and supply volatility at the local level.
