Four Debt Collectors Arrested Over Threats, Defamation Against Contractor

PETALING JAYA, April 28 — Four debt collectors have been detained after allegedly resorting to intimidation and defamatory tactics against a contractor, following a police operation in Cheras last week.

The suspects, aged between 19 and 26, were arrested by the D7 Criminal Investigation Division of Cheras District Police Headquarters during an Op Cantas raid conducted on April 23 in Desa Bukit Tiara.

Cheras district police chief Mohd Rosdi Daud said the arrests were made after a contractor lodged a report claiming that his residence had been targeted with defamatory stickers, while he also received threatening phone calls.

During the operation, police seized several items believed to have been used to intimidate victims, including a Perodua Axia car, five mobile phones, a loudspeaker and two vests bearing debt collector markings.

Initial investigations revealed that the group had been actively carrying out harassment activities across 18 locations in the Klang Valley, including Kuala Lumpur, Puchong, Petaling Jaya and Rawang.

“The suspects are believed to have been involved in multiple cases of disturbance and intimidation in various areas,” Mohd Rosdi said in a statement.

The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.

All four suspects were remanded for three days before being released on police bail yesterday.

Police said the investigation papers are currently being finalised before being submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further instructions.
