Finas Strengthens Industry Competitiveness with VFX and AI Collaboration with MMU

CYBERJAYA, April 15 — The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) is reinforcing efforts to boost the competitiveness of Malaysia’s film industry by advancing the use of visual effects (VFX) and artificial intelligence (AI) through a strategic partnership with Multimedia University (MMU).

Finas chairman Hans Isaac said the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to ensure that Malaysia’s creative sector remains competitive in an increasingly technology-driven global market.

He emphasised that mastering advanced production tools such as VFX and AI is essential for improving content quality and expanding international reach.

“If we want to compete globally, we must equip our creators with the necessary technological skills. VFX and AI are no longer optional — they are essential,” he said during the MoU signing ceremony at MMU’s Faculty of Creative Multimedia.

Also present was Finas chief executive officer Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib, who highlighted the importance of collaboration between academic institutions and industry players in developing a sustainable talent pipeline.

Hans noted that Finas is committed to expanding partnerships with universities to provide greater access to training, research opportunities, and technological resources.

He stressed that investing in local talent is critical to ensuring the long-term growth of the industry, particularly as global competition intensifies.

“The industry requires more skilled professionals in creative technologies. This is crucial not only for improving production quality but also for sustaining industry growth,” he said.

The integration of AI is expected to enhance efficiency across various stages of production, including editing, audience analytics, and content management.

Meanwhile, VFX continues to play a vital role in creating high-quality visual experiences that can attract audiences and increase the commercial value of films.

The collaboration is also expected to provide students with hands-on experience through industry-linked projects, helping them bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world demands.

This approach aims to produce graduates who are better prepared for the evolving needs of the creative sector.

Finas hopes that these efforts will strengthen Malaysia’s position within the regional creative industry, enabling local productions to reach broader international markets.

By focusing on both technological advancement and talent development, the initiative is set to drive long-term growth and innovation in Malaysia’s film and content production landscape.
