Economic Strain from Middle East Conflict Forces Malaysia to Delay Major Projects, Focus on Essential Needs
IPOH: Malaysia is recalibrating its development priorities by postponing large-scale projects as economic pressures intensify בעקבות the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, with the government shifting focus toward initiatives that directly benefit the public.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the country is facing a significant increase in monthly expenditure, estimated at around RM6 billion, driven by external geopolitical factors despite the conflict occurring far from Malaysia.
He noted that under such circumstances, fiscal discipline has become critical, requiring the government to prioritise spending on essential services and infrastructure that provide immediate benefits to citizens.
“We are not in a position to proceed with major projects at this time. Our priority is to address urgent needs such as school repairs, public facilities, and community infrastructure,” he said during a public engagement event in Tambun.
Anwar stressed that the decision to defer large projects is not a retreat from development but a necessary adjustment to ensure sustainable financial management during uncertain economic conditions.
He also called on all sectors of society to adopt prudent spending habits, highlighting the importance of reducing non-essential expenditures to help cushion the impact of global economic pressures.
Addressing his personal decision to forgo a salary, the Prime Minister clarified that it should not be used as a standard for comparison, as salaries remain a legitimate entitlement.
“The issue is not about salaries, but about ensuring integrity. Corruption and abuse of power must never be tolerated,” he said.
He reiterated that the government remains firm in upholding accountability and transparency, particularly in times of economic strain where public trust is crucial.
As global uncertainties continue to shape economic realities, Malaysia aims to strike a careful balance between maintaining fiscal stability and protecting the welfare of its people, with a clear emphasis on practical, high-impact initiatives.
