Bront Palarae, Yumi Wong Front Regional Supernatural Thriller ‘Kong Tao’ Ahead of March 19 Release
KUALA LUMPUR – Southeast Asia’s film industry is set for a major cross-border collaboration as Bront Palarae and Yumi Wong headline Kong Tao, a Malaysia–Singapore–Thailand black-magic thriller scheduled to open in cinemas nationwide on March 19.
The multinational production unites prominent talents from across the region, including Thai actress Kao Supassara Thanachat, Singaporean star Glenn Yong and Hong Kong actor Philip Keung, underscoring its ambition to reach audiences beyond domestic markets.
Helmed by co-directors Peiji Goh and Yong Choon Lin, the project reflects a growing trend of regional genre filmmaking that blends cultural folklore with contemporary storytelling.
Investigative Journalism Meets the Occult
Kong Tao centres on Fon, a determined Thai journalist probing a long-buried case involving alleged black magic rituals tied to a group of students years earlier. Her investigation intersects with four content creators who travel to Thailand seeking paranormal experiences for their online audience.
What begins as an exploration of mysticism gradually unravels into a chain of disturbing events after the group returns home. Haunted by unexplained occurrences, they suspect they have triggered a curse, prompting Fon to seek guidance from a practitioner of white magic.
As layers of secrecy unfold, the narrative deepens into a psychological confrontation between belief and scepticism, tradition and modern curiosity.
A Pan-Regional Production Vision
Backed by multiple production houses including Distinct Entertainment and De Kangaroo Pictures, and distributed by Mega Films Distribution, Kong Tao represents a collaborative effort spanning Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. The film also received institutional backing from Malaysia’s Ministry of Communications and FINAS.
Since principal photography began in May 2024, anticipation has steadily built around the project, particularly within horror circles eager for a Southeast Asian narrative rooted in authentic ritual lore.
Heightened Atmosphere and Spiritual Conflict
Promotional material hints at an atmospheric and suspense-driven experience, emphasising spiritual tension rather than relying solely on shock elements. Central to the film is the clash between black and white sorcery, portrayed through layered performances and ritual symbolism.
Philip Keung’s role as a formidable occult figure adds gravitas, while Bront Palarae’s involvement signals strong dramatic grounding within the ensemble.
With its cross-cultural cast, folkloric depth and regional production scale, Kong Tao positions itself as one of 2026’s most anticipated supernatural thrillers in Southeast Asia, aiming to merge cinematic spectacle with the enduring mystique of traditional belief systems.
