Azalina Urges Landowners to Use Legal Channels in Encroachment Disputes
Minister Stresses Importance of Following Proper Legal Processes
PUTRAJAYA: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Azalina Othman Said, has urged landowners facing encroachment disputes to rely on proper legal channels to safeguard their rights.
She said any objections involving land ownership or development must be formally documented, either through police reports or legal notices issued by lawyers, to ensure the matter is properly addressed.
According to her, official documentation is essential to avoid prolonged disputes based on conflicting claims and to enable authorities to investigate effectively.
“I am confident that our legal system remains structured and must be respected. Taking matters into one’s own hands could complicate the situation, especially when disputes involve sensitive elements such as religion and belief,” she told reporters after the Fast Track 2026 programme launch in Putrajaya.
Supports Advice to Lodge Police Reports
Azalina was responding to remarks by Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari, who had advised landowners to file police reports to facilitate investigations and legal action if encroachment is proven.
She noted that such measures are necessary to ensure disputes are handled within the framework of the law.
Government Ready to Assist Through Mediation
At the same time, Azalina said the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department is prepared to provide mediation services to help resolve disputes.
She explained that mediation can offer quicker and more cost-effective solutions compared to court proceedings.
She added that expanding mediation services is part of the government’s efforts to strengthen dispute resolution mechanisms and promote orderly conflict management nationwide.
