Anwar Ibrahim Reaffirms Malaysia’s Commitment to Strengthening Ties with Bangladesh’s New Leadership
KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia has reaffirmed its intention to deepen bilateral cooperation with Bangladesh following the appointment of its new Prime Minister, marking a fresh chapter in diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he personally extended congratulations to Bangladesh’s newly appointed leader, Tarique Rahman, during a telephone conversation held shortly after the latter’s electoral victory.
Anwar described the election as a clear demonstration of the Bangladeshi people’s commitment to democracy, highlighting that the process had been conducted peacefully and in an orderly manner.
He also expressed Malaysia’s readiness to work closely with Bangladesh’s new administration to elevate bilateral relations and expand cooperation across multiple sectors.
As part of efforts to strengthen diplomatic engagement, Anwar invited Tarique to undertake an official visit to Malaysia in the future.
Malaysia and Bangladesh have maintained longstanding diplomatic and economic relations, particularly in trade and workforce cooperation.
Bangladesh has been an important partner for Malaysia, especially in labour and economic exchanges that contribute to both countries’ growth.
Tarique’s appointment represents a significant political milestone, given his family’s historical influence in Bangladesh’s leadership.
He is the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and former President Ziaur Rahman, both of whom played major roles in shaping the country’s political landscape.
Malaysia views the leadership transition as an opportunity to further enhance diplomatic, economic and strategic cooperation.
Anwar emphasised that Malaysia remains committed to strengthening ties with Bangladesh to ensure mutual progress and shared prosperity for both nations.
