Anwar Allocates RM2 Million to Boost Sepak Takraw Development and Athlete Welfare
KUALA LUMPUR, April 15 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced a RM2 million allocation to the Sepak Takraw Federation of Malaysia (PSM) to enhance the management and development of the Malaysian Sepak Takraw Academy Complex in the capital.
The funding will be directed toward several key areas, with a strong emphasis on improving the welfare of athletes undergoing training at the facility. This includes provisions for daily necessities such as meals, accommodation, and essential equipment.
Anwar said ensuring the well-being of players is critical to building a strong foundation for the sport, noting that athletes perform best when their basic needs are properly addressed.
“I agree that the players must be well taken care of. Part of this allocation will go toward their food, comfort, and attire, ensuring they can focus fully on their training,” he said during the official opening of the complex.
He added that the funds would also support the association’s operational needs, including travel expenses and ongoing development of the academy.
The event was attended by several key figures in Malaysia’s sports administration, including Youth and Sports Minister Mohammed Taufiq Johari, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh, Olympic Council of Malaysia president Mohamad Norza Zakaria, and PSM president Mohd Sumali Reduan.
The Malaysian Sepak Takraw Academy Complex, located along Jalan Raja Muda Abdul Aziz in Kampung Baru, was developed at a cost of RM6 million. It features a comprehensive range of facilities, including athlete accommodation, a gymnasium, study areas, and dedicated training courts within a single integrated space.
The complex is expected to serve as a central hub for nurturing new talent while providing a more structured and professional training environment for national athletes.
In addition, Anwar revealed that the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia has approved a separate RM1 million allocation to support the organisation of the 2026 Sepak Takraw World Cup.
The tournament, set to take place at Titiwangsa Stadium from May 16 to 23, will feature both Premier and Division 1 competitions, attracting teams from various countries.
He emphasised that hosting international events is crucial for raising the profile of sepak takraw globally, while also giving Malaysian athletes valuable exposure at a competitive level.
The government’s financial support reflects a broader commitment to strengthening traditional sports and ensuring that athletes receive the resources needed to excel.
With enhanced funding and improved facilities, PSM is expected to further develop the sport at both grassroots and elite levels, positioning Malaysia as a leading force in sepak takraw on the international stage.
