Ampang Landslides Highlight Risks of Prolonged Rainfall, Authorities Urge Vigilance
KUALA LUMPUR, April 19 — Two landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in Ampang have renewed concerns over slope safety in residential areas, although swift response efforts ensured that no injuries or major structural damage were recorded.
The incidents occurred along Jalan Indah 4 in Kampung Ampang Indah, where hilly terrain and continuous rain combined to destabilise sections of the slope. The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department confirmed receiving reports of both incidents within a short span of time on Sunday afternoon.
Assistant director of operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said the first landslide was reported at around 3.35pm, involving a section of hillside behind a residential property. The affected area measured approximately 20 by 20 feet.
Despite the scale of the collapse, the landslide did not impact any structures, nor did it result in injuries. Emergency responders quickly secured the area, conducting initial assessments to ensure that there was no immediate threat to nearby homes.
Just minutes later, a second landslide was reported along the same stretch of road. This incident involved a slightly smaller slope measuring 15 by 20 feet. Debris from the collapse struck a parked van, causing damage to the vehicle.
Authorities confirmed that no individuals were inside the vehicle at the time, preventing what could have been a more serious outcome.
Five personnel from the Ampang Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched to manage the situation. Their response included clearing debris, assessing soil stability and monitoring for any further movement that could pose risks to residents.
The incidents have drawn attention to the impact of sustained rainfall on hillside areas, where water saturation can weaken soil structure and increase the likelihood of slope failure.
Experts note that even moderate slopes can become unstable when drainage systems are overwhelmed or when soil conditions deteriorate due to prolonged exposure to rain.
Local authorities have urged residents living in hillside areas to remain alert, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. Early warning signs such as cracks in walls or ground surfaces, unusual sounds or shifting soil should not be ignored.
Residents are also advised to avoid parking vehicles near slopes and to stay clear of areas showing signs of instability.
While no significant structural damage was recorded in these incidents, authorities are expected to conduct further inspections to assess the long-term stability of the affected slopes.
Preventive measures such as reinforcing slopes, improving drainage systems and regular monitoring may be implemented to reduce the risk of future incidents.
The Ampang landslides come at a time when seasonal weather patterns continue to bring heavy rainfall to various parts of the country, increasing the risk of similar occurrences.
Emergency services have reiterated the importance of preparedness, emphasising that quick reporting and response can significantly reduce potential harm.
Although the situation in Ampang was managed without casualties, it serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of weather-related hazards and the need for continuous vigilance.
