Probe Finds No Safety Breaches Linked to Alleged ‘Cancer Cluster’ at UMMC

DENGKIL: Authorities have ruled out radiation safety violations following a detailed investigation into claims of a cancer cluster at the Nuclear Medicine Unit of University Malaya Medical Centre.

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), through the Atomic Energy Department, said the review was conducted in collaboration with the Medical Radiation Regulatory Division under the Ministry of Health.

Findings from the investigation confirmed that there were no critical lapses in radiation safety compliance that could be associated with the reported cases.

Comprehensive Review of Safety Practices

The inquiry examined operational procedures, radiation handling protocols and adherence to established safety standards within the facility.

Officials emphasised that strict regulatory frameworks are in place governing the use of radioactive materials and radiation equipment, particularly in healthcare settings where safety oversight is critical.

These measures are designed to minimise risks and ensure a controlled environment for both staff and patients.

Clear Oversight Structure in Place

Under Malaysia’s regulatory system, the Atomic Energy Department oversees licensing for non-medical uses of radioactive materials, while medical applications fall under the authority of the Ministry of Health.

This division of responsibilities ensures that all radiation-related activities are monitored by specialised agencies with relevant expertise.

Assurance of Continued Monitoring

Authorities reiterated their commitment to maintaining high safety standards and enforcing compliance across all licensed facilities.

They stressed that strict action will be taken against any party found to be in violation of regulatory requirements.

The outcome of the investigation is expected to provide reassurance to the public and reinforce confidence in Malaysia’s radiation safety oversight system.
