Fadillah: Sarawak’s Strategic Focus on Renewable Energy and Digital Economy Positions It as Future Growth Leader
KUCHING, April 20 — Sarawak’s focus on renewable energy, digital transformation and education is positioning the state on a steady path towards becoming a leading force in the future economy, Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof said.
He noted that the state’s development direction reflects a structured and forward-looking strategy aimed at strengthening economic resilience while improving the overall well-being of its people.
According to Fadillah, Sarawak is leveraging its strengths in natural resources, particularly gas, alongside expanding investments in renewable energy and downstream industries. This approach, he said, not only enhances economic value but also creates employment opportunities and supports sustainable growth.
“The direction taken demonstrates a clear commitment to long-term development that balances economic progress with social outcomes,” he said in a statement following a major state-level gathering in Kuching.
Fadillah added that the emphasis on clean energy and digitalisation aligns with global trends, where economies are increasingly shifting towards sustainable and technology-driven growth models.
He said investments in digital infrastructure and innovation are expected to strengthen Sarawak’s competitiveness, enabling it to attract new industries and enhance productivity across sectors.
At the same time, he stressed the importance of education and human capital development in ensuring that the benefits of economic growth are widely shared.
“A strong foundation in education is essential to equip the workforce with the skills needed for emerging industries, particularly those linked to technology and energy,” he said.
Fadillah also highlighted the importance of a balanced approach in managing strategic resources, noting that effective governance and collaboration between different levels of administration are key to ensuring fair and sustainable outcomes.
He said such cooperation allows for better coordination in implementing development initiatives, particularly those involving large-scale infrastructure and resource management.
Observers note that Sarawak’s emphasis on renewable energy has become a defining feature of its development model, with the state positioning itself as a potential regional hub for clean energy production.
The focus on downstream industries, meanwhile, is aimed at increasing value-added activities and reducing reliance on raw resource exports.
Fadillah said that maintaining stability and continuity in policy implementation is equally important to ensure long-term success.
He added that a cohesive approach to governance, supported by experienced leadership and the inclusion of new perspectives, can help sustain momentum in development efforts.
“Development requires consistency, planning and the ability to adapt to changing conditions,” he said.
He also called on all segments of society to play a role in supporting development initiatives, emphasising that inclusive participation is key to achieving shared prosperity.
“Economic progress must be accompanied by unity and cooperation to ensure that its benefits reach all communities,” he added.
As Sarawak continues to advance its development agenda, analysts believe its integrated approach — combining energy, technology and education — could serve as a model for sustainable growth in the region.
