Saifuddin Nasution Ismail: RM2 Million Study Evaluates New Bukit Berapit ICQS Development
PENGKALAN HULU: The government is conducting a RM2 million feasibility study on the proposed construction of a new Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) complex at Bukit Berapit, aimed at strengthening border security and improving user convenience.
Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the study will assess the necessity of a new facility and determine the most suitable site for development.
He noted that the current setup at Bukit Berapit presents logistical challenges, particularly due to the distance between the Malaysian and Thai checkpoints, which affects the smooth movement of travellers.
“Although the distance is less than one kilometre, travellers still have to walk quite far with their luggage after clearing immigration, which also raises certain safety concerns,” he said.
Alternative Sites Under Consideration
Saifuddin said several potential locations have been identified through discussions with the Perak state government for the new complex.
He emphasised that a comprehensive study would help accelerate planning and eventual implementation.
Land-related matters are also currently being addressed as part of the development process.
AKPS to Streamline Border Management
He added that the Bukit Berapit ICQS is expected to come under the supervision of the Agensi Kawalan dan Perlindungan Sempadan Malaysia (AKPS) to enhance and streamline border control operations.
“AKPS is expected to take over up to 122 entry points nationwide across land, sea and air routes, including Bukit Berapit,” he said.
However, he noted that full takeover will only take place once manpower, infrastructure and operational systems are fully in place.
Focus on Key Border Entry Points
To date, AKPS has assumed control of 22 out of 122 entry points, prioritising critical border areas such as those in Kedah and Kelantan.
The proposed ICQS development is expected to improve border efficiency, ease congestion and enhance overall travel flow at the Bukit Berapit crossing.
