Zur Eda Opens Up on Depression, Finds Strength After Personal Loss
KUALA LUMPUR: Veteran singer Zur Eda has revealed that she went through a period of deep depression following the loss of her unborn child, describing it as the lowest point in her life.
Speaking during a media session at the Ijmal Ramadan concert, she said the incident in August 1999, caused by pregnancy complications, placed her in a critical condition.
She recalled that doctors were forced to decide between saving her life or the baby’s.
“I wanted my child to be saved, even if it meant risking my life. But the decision was made to save me because I had other children who depended on me,” she said.
A Difficult Emotional Recovery
The loss left a lasting emotional impact, with Zur Eda taking more than a year to recover from the psychological effects.
She admitted that even minor reminders related to babies would trigger emotional distress during that period.
“It wasn’t easy to move on. It took a long time to regain strength,” she said.
She added that a significant dream experience eventually helped her come to terms with the loss and find peace.
Facing a Serious Health Challenge
Zur Eda also faced another major challenge when complications from kidney stones led to a two-week coma.
After regaining consciousness, she had to be sedated again for over a month as her body recovered.
She described the experience as life-changing, giving her a deeper appreciation for health and life.
“It taught me to be more grateful for every moment,” she said.
Standing Firm Despite Criticism
She also reflected on her decision to marry at the age of 20, a choice she made to ease her family’s concerns while she was working as a nightclub singer.
Now married for over four decades, she said she faced criticism from those who believed early marriage could affect her career.
“I believe that sustenance is determined, regardless of when we marry,” she said.
Exploring New Income Streams
The COVID-19 pandemic led her to explore new opportunities, including starting a food business under the brand Zur Eda Kitchen.
Using recipes learned from her mother-in-law, she now generates additional income through her cooking.
Continuing Her Passion for Music
At 61, Zur Eda remains active in performing, especially during festive seasons, though she now limits her engagements to maintain her health.
“I’m grateful I still receive offers, but I now prioritise my well-being,” she said.
Her story reflects resilience and the strength to overcome life’s most difficult challenges, offering inspiration through perseverance and acceptance.
