Naqiu Stays True to Conventional Songwriting, Says AI Not Part of His Craft
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian singer and composer Naqiu has reiterated that he has no intention of incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into his music-making process, choosing instead to remain committed to traditional songwriting methods.
Naqiu, whose real name is Wan Naqiuddin Mohd. Najib, said he continues to favour a conventional approach, which he believes allows greater creative control and authenticity in his work.
“AI is not for me. I still prefer creating songs the traditional way,” he said during a recent media engagement at Red Box The Gardens.
He clarified that his stance should not be interpreted as resistance to technological progress, noting that the use of AI in music is a matter of personal choice. Naqiu added that he respects fellow artists who have embraced such tools in their creative process.
“I don’t see AI as a problem. The industry evolves, and everyone has their own way of working,” he said.
Naqiu also shared insights into his composition Satu, performed by Azmi Saat, revealing that the song had been completed years earlier before eventually being released.
He explained that the melody was finalised first, before lyricist Wit Mohsen proposed the title and later developed the lyrics to complete the piece.
“I kept the song for about five years. The melody came first before the lyrics were written,” he said.
According to Naqiu, Azmi was chosen for the track due to his vocal strength and ability to deliver emotionally driven, spiritually themed material.
However, the release was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as Naqiu’s other professional commitments at the time.
The opportunity to release the song eventually came when Sony Music Malaysia invited Naqiu to produce a soundtrack for the drama Mencari Isteri Sempurna. He proposed Satu for the project, leading to a fresh recording session with Azmi.
Naqiu described the song’s journey as a meaningful one, underscoring how carefully crafted music can remain relevant even after years of being shelved before reaching its audience.
