Government Assures Adequate Fuel Supply, Temporary Disruptions Being Addressed
KUALA LUMPUR: The government has reaffirmed that Malaysia’s fuel supply remains adequate and stable, despite temporary disruptions reported at several petrol stations. Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, Fuziah Salleh, stated that the overall situation is under control and does not pose any serious concern.
She urged the public not to engage in panic buying, stressing that such behaviour could disrupt the balance of supply at the retail level. Consumers are instead encouraged to continue purchasing fuel based on their normal daily needs.
According to her, maintaining supply stability requires cooperation from all parties, including consumers, station operators and fuel suppliers. The government remains committed to providing timely updates to ensure accurate information reaches the public and to prevent unnecessary speculation.
Addressing the shortages reported in certain areas, Fuziah clarified that the issue is temporary and limited to a small number of stations. The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), together with industry stakeholders, is closely monitoring the situation.
She noted that immediate corrective measures have been implemented, including faster fuel deliveries and improved distribution coordination, to restore supply in affected locations as quickly as possible.
Earlier, Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd indicated that a sudden spike in demand had contributed to the temporary shortages at selected stations. The surge is believed to be driven by consumer concerns, leading to higher-than-usual purchasing within a short timeframe.
The company has assured that it is actively working to replenish fuel stocks at impacted stations, focusing on enhancing supply chain efficiency and accelerating distribution processes.
Meanwhile, authorities are intensifying enforcement efforts to prevent any misuse or diversion of subsidised fuel. These measures are crucial to ensure that fuel supplies reach intended users and are not exploited by irresponsible parties.
The government reiterated that there is no cause for alarm, as national fuel reserves remain sufficient. With continuous monitoring and coordinated actions, the situation is expected to normalise in the near future without major disruptions.
