High Court to Deliver Ruling on Shamsul Iskandar’s Case Transfer Bid on April 28
KUALA LUMPUR, April 9 — The High Court has set April 28 to deliver its decision on an application by Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin to transfer five corruption charges from the Sessions Court to the High Court.
Judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin fixed the date after hearing submissions from both the defence and prosecution.
The defence argued that the case involves constitutional and complex legal questions that warrant consideration at the High Court level.
They further contended that the transfer would not prejudice any party and would allow for a more thorough determination of the issues involved.
Allegations Involving Cash and Benefits
Shamsul Iskandar is accused of receiving bribes from a businessman in exchange for facilitating mineral exploration licences in Sabah.
The charges include RM100,000 and RM40,000 in cash, as well as furniture and electrical items valued at over RM30,000.
The alleged offences took place across Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya between late 2023 and early 2024.
Separate Charge in Shah Alam
He also faces a separate charge in Shah Alam involving RM62,924, which was allegedly deposited into a third party’s account as rental payment linked to the same arrangement.
Severe Penalties if Convicted
All charges are brought under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine of at least five times the value of the gratification.
The ruling later this month is expected to determine the next course of the proceedings.
