No Immediate State Polls Planned in Perak, Saarani Dismisses Early Election Speculation

IPOH, April 9 — The Perak state government has firmly denied any plans to hold a state election in the near future, rejecting speculation triggered by a recent media report.

Menteri Besar Saarani Mohamad said the matter has never been discussed in any official forum or among the state leadership.

He described claims that Perak could be used as a “testing ground” ahead of Malaysia’s next general election as inaccurate and unfounded.

“I was surprised by the report as there has been no discussion whatsoever on dissolving the state assembly,” he said.

Saarani explained that calling for a state election involves formal constitutional procedures, including seeking consent from Sultan Nazrin Shah to dissolve the legislative assembly.

He added that failure to obtain such consent could carry serious consequences, potentially being interpreted as a resignation of the Menteri Besar.

“In the current situation, there is no reason to take such a risk,” he said.

He also emphasised that the state government still has more than a year left to serve its full five-year mandate.

As such, the administration remains focused on governance stability and ongoing development efforts rather than entertaining the possibility of early elections.

Saarani made the remarks after attending the Perak@PORT Creative Fund handover ceremony for the 2025/2026 edition at the Perak Darul Ridzuan building.

The clarification is seen as an attempt to quell political speculation that could create uncertainty, particularly as the national political climate becomes increasingly sensitive ahead of future elections.
