Perak Still Assessing WFH Policy for State Civil Servants, Decision Pending Detailed Review

IPOH, April 6 — The Perak state government has yet to finalise the implementation of work-from-home (WFH) arrangements for its civil servants, as a comprehensive review is currently being conducted by the State Secretary’s office.

Menteri Besar Saarani Mohamad said the review follows a circular issued by Chief Secretary to the Government Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, which encourages states to assess the feasibility of adopting the policy.

He said the State Secretary is evaluating multiple factors, including departmental operational needs, system readiness, and potential impacts on service delivery before any decision is made.

“The state government is taking a cautious approach to ensure all aspects are thoroughly considered,” he said.

He was speaking at a press conference after an event involving the distribution of additional SPM reference books.

Briefing for Department Heads Planned

Saarani said a special briefing session will be held soon involving heads of departments to outline the proposed framework and gather feedback.

The initiative aims to ensure that any implementation aligns with operational requirements and does not disrupt public service functions.

He noted that proper coordination is essential to avoid confusion and ensure effectiveness.

WFH Approach Now More Strategic

He added that the current WFH proposal differs from the approach taken during the COVID-19 pandemic, which was primarily aimed at reducing physical interaction.

The new approach focuses on improving efficiency and introducing greater flexibility within the public sector.

Saarani emphasised that civil servants must understand these objectives to ensure successful implementation.

Economic Support Measures Under Review

In a related development, he said the state government is also reviewing the need for economic stimulus measures based on current conditions.

Any proposed assistance will be discussed in a special state meeting, with priority given to supporting farmers and small business operators.

Focus on Strengthening Food Security

He also noted that the state recently attended a federal briefing on initiatives to enhance food security through short-term crop cultivation.

The effort is seen as a proactive strategy to maintain stable food supply amid ongoing economic uncertainties.
