Monsoon Transition Cools Heatwave as Heavy Rain Returns Across Malaysia
PETALING JAYA — Malaysia’s recent spell of hot weather is expected to ease as the country moves into the inter-monsoon phase, bringing a rise in rainfall activity nationwide.
The seasonal shift, which began on March 29, is forecast to bring short-duration heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, particularly during the late afternoon and evening.
Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup said the changing atmospheric conditions are helping to lower temperatures while also aiding the recovery of reservoir levels affected by prolonged dry weather.
He noted that the latest monitoring data from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) shows a clear decline in the number of areas experiencing temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius.
“Currently, only eight locations in Peninsular Malaysia remain under alert status, with maximum daily temperatures ranging between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius over three consecutive days,” he said.
The trend indicates that the extreme heat conditions previously experienced are gradually subsiding in line with seasonal changes.
To support water resource stability, the government will carry out cloud seeding operations from April 6 to April 9. The initiative will be led by the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), with technical collaboration from MetMalaysia and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (TUDM).
The operations will focus on northern Peninsular states and Johor, particularly areas where reservoir levels have declined due to earlier dry conditions.
Arthur also advised the public to remain vigilant during this transitional period, as weather conditions may shift rapidly, resulting in sudden heavy rainfall and strong winds.
He encouraged Malaysians to stay updated through official MetMalaysia channels to ensure safety and better planning of daily activities.
The government will continue monitoring developments closely to safeguard water resources and maintain environmental sustainability.
Overall, the monsoon transition marks a crucial turning point, easing extreme heat while supporting the gradual recovery of the country’s water reserves.
