Hamzah Accepts Possibility of Losing Opposition Leader Role, Says Position Depends on Majority Support

LARUT – The position of Opposition Leader in Parliament depends on the support of the majority of opposition Members of Parliament rather than any single political party, said Hamzah Zainudin.

According to him, the role requires strong cooperation among all opposition lawmakers to ensure that the opposition can effectively carry out its responsibility of providing checks and balances to the government.

Hamzah said he is prepared to accept any decision made collectively by opposition MPs if they decide he should no longer hold the position.

“To serve as Opposition Leader, one needs the support of fellow opposition MPs.

“If the majority no longer want me to hold the position, I will accept that decision because it reflects the will of the majority,” he said.

He made the remarks when speaking to reporters after attending a charity event where aid was distributed to asnaf recipients in the Larut parliamentary constituency.

Position Not Limited to Any Party

Hamzah explained that the role of Opposition Leader is not reserved for representatives from any particular political party.

Instead, any MP within the opposition bloc may assume the position as long as they receive majority support from their colleagues.

He emphasised that what matters most is ensuring the opposition bloc continues to function effectively in Parliament.

“The position does not belong to any specific party. Any opposition MP who gains the support of the majority can serve as Opposition Leader,” he said.

Response to PAS Proposal

Hamzah was responding to comments by Abdul Hadi Awang, who said that Parti Islam Se-Malaysia is ready to nominate one of its representatives for the role if the proposal receives support from opposition MPs.

According to Hamzah, such suggestions are part of the democratic process within the opposition bloc.

He reiterated that the final decision ultimately depends on the collective agreement of opposition lawmakers.

Importance of Opposition Unity

Hamzah also stressed the importance of unity among opposition MPs in strengthening their role in Parliament.

He noted that the opposition’s responsibility extends beyond criticising government policies, as it must also provide alternative ideas and constructive viewpoints.

As long as opposition MPs work together, he said, they can perform their duties more effectively in representing the interests of the public.

“The most important thing is unity and cooperation among opposition MPs so that we can carry out our responsibilities effectively in Parliament,” he said.
