NGO urges MPs to back constitutional amendments on PM term limit and separation of Attorney General’s powers

PETALING JAYA, Feb 24 — A non-governmental organisation, Wadah Pencerdasan Umat Malaysia (Wadah), has called on Members of Parliament to fully support proposed constitutional amendments involving the term limit of the Prime Minister and the separation of the Attorney General’s and Public Prosecutor’s roles.

The organisation said both proposed amendments represent a major step forward in strengthening democratic governance and improving institutional accountability.

According to Wadah, the reforms could help create a healthier balance of power while restoring public trust in Malaysia’s administrative and legal systems.

It said the amendments are expected to enhance transparency and reinforce the integrity of key institutions.

Wadah urged lawmakers from all political parties to prioritise national interest when considering the proposed changes.

“This is an important moment for Parliament to demonstrate its commitment to strengthening democratic principles and ensuring a fair and transparent governance system,” the organisation said in a statement.

The NGO emphasised that supporting the amendments would help ensure Malaysia’s political and legal framework continues to evolve positively.

The government tabled both constitutional amendment bills for first reading in Parliament yesterday as part of its institutional reform agenda.

The Constitution (Amendment) (No. 1) Bill 2026 seeks to introduce a maximum limit of 10 years for the Prime Minister’s tenure.

The proposal is intended to prevent prolonged concentration of power and promote leadership renewal.

Meanwhile, the Constitution (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2026 aims to separate the roles of the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor.

The reform is intended to address concerns over potential conflicts of interest and ensure prosecutorial independence.

Wadah also expressed its support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the government for introducing the proposed amendments.

The organisation described the move as a significant effort to strengthen Malaysia’s democratic institutions.

It said the reforms could mark an important milestone in enhancing governance and institutional integrity in the country.
