KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 17 — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has cautioned the public that possessing or using illegal firecrackers can lead to severe legal consequences, including fines of up to RM10,000 and imprisonment for as long as seven years.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said firecrackers fall under the category of explosive materials under Malaysian law, making their use subject to strict regulation.
He said the restrictions are necessary to prevent accidents, fires and public disturbances, particularly during festive celebrations.
Only approved fireworks allowed with permit
Mohd Khalid explained that only specific types of fireworks are permitted and even those require official approval.

The permit system ensures that fireworks are used responsibly.
Unauthorised possession or use is considered an offence.
Strict penalties aimed at protecting public safety
Authorities said violations of explosive laws can result in heavy fines and imprisonment.
The severity of punishment depends on the nature of the offence.
Minor offences may also lead to legal action under other relevant laws.
Police emphasised that strict enforcement is necessary to deter illegal activities.
Public urged to celebrate responsibly and safely
PDRM urged Malaysians to follow safety rules and use only permitted fireworks.
They advised the public to avoid using illegal firecrackers.
