Perlis Government Introduces PERKESO Coverage and Raises MPKK Allowances
Move Aims to Strengthen Welfare and Grassroots Leadership
KANGAR: The Perlis state government has allocated RM121,672 to provide protection contributions under the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) for members of the Village Development and Security Committees (MPKK).
Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah said the coverage will be valid for one year and ensures members are eligible for compensation in the event of accidents while carrying out their duties.
He said the initiative reflects the state government’s recognition of the important role played by MPKK members in supporting local administration and community development.
More Committees Approved for New Term
Abu Bakar said 413 MPKK committees have been approved for the 2026–2027 term, including 34 new branches established to meet current community needs.
He encouraged members to remain committed throughout their term to ensure smooth governance and continuity in development programmes.
Allowances Increased to Reflect Responsibilities
Under the 2026 state budget, the chairman’s monthly allowance has been increased to RM400, while the secretary’s allowance has been raised to RM300, both reflecting RM100 increments.
Meeting attendance allowances have also been increased to RM30 per session.
New Conditions Introduced to Ensure Accountability
He said while allowances will continue to be paid monthly, new requirements have been introduced to ensure committees remain active.
Committees that fail to conduct at least three meetings in the first six months may have their allowances suspended.
MPKK Serves as Vital Link Between Government and Communities
Abu Bakar said MPKK plays a crucial role in bridging communication between the state government and local communities.
He added that the committees help convey government initiatives, represent community concerns, and assist in planning grassroots development to ensure sustainable and inclusive progress.
