Meerqeen Reduces Social Media Use After Facing Criticism Over Weight Gain
Actor Says Physical Change Was Part of Role Preparation
SHAH ALAM: Rising Malaysian star Meerqeen said he has been the subject of negative comments online following a physical transformation that saw his weight increase to about 90 kilograms.
Meerqeen, whose full name is Muhammad Shameer Shauqeen Shaiful Izam, clarified that the change was intentional and necessary for a new acting role, not due to health problems as speculated by some social media users.
He said while many fans understood his decision, others made unfounded assumptions about his condition based solely on his appearance.
“I expected people to talk about it, but it still affects you when they assume something without knowing the real reason,” he said at the Gempak Most Wanted Awards 2025 in Shah Alam.
Limits Online Activity to Stay Mentally Focused
Meerqeen said he has since reduced his time on social media to maintain emotional balance and focus on his professional commitments.
Previously spending up to 12 hours a day online, he now limits his usage to around six hours, mainly for work-related matters.
He said the change has helped him avoid unnecessary negativity and stay focused on his goals.
Strict Training Routine for Upcoming Role
The Melur Untuk Firdaus actor explained that his physical transformation involves regular gym sessions five times a week.
He said achieving the required physique takes discipline and dedication, and he chose not to publicly share his training routine.
He added that stepping back from social media has helped him feel calmer and more committed to his preparation.
Filming Expected to Begin in July
Meerqeen confirmed that filming for the project is scheduled to begin around July, although he has not revealed further details.
He added that he is currently declining other acting opportunities to fully concentrate on the upcoming production.
