KL Rally Calls for Accountability as Pressure Mounts on MACC Chief Azam Baki
KUALA LUMPUR – Demonstrators gathered in the city centre today calling for accountability and firmer action involving Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia chief commissioner Azam Baki amid renewed scrutiny over his alleged shareholdings.
The rally, organised by electoral reform coalition Bersih, saw participants dressed in black as a symbolic gesture reflecting concerns over institutional integrity.
Speakers at the event argued that the credibility of Malaysia’s anti-corruption framework hinges on public confidence in its leadership. They urged that investigations be conducted transparently and independently to avoid perceptions of selective enforcement.
Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli reminded attendees that public dissatisfaction with corruption had been a decisive factor in recent electoral outcomes, cautioning that reform pledges must translate into action.
Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad echoed similar sentiments, noting that calls for institutional reform are consistent with earlier public demonstrations addressing the same issue.
Shareholding Allegations Resurface
The controversy intensified following an international media report alleging that Azam continued to hold shares beyond limits permitted for civil servants.
Regulations governing public officers impose caps on share ownership to prevent conflicts of interest.
Azam has denied any wrongdoing and initiated legal proceedings against the allegations. He has also declined to take leave pending the findings of a special task force reviewing the matter.
Meanwhile, several lawmakers have called for the task force’s mandate to be expanded to examine additional claims related to alleged misuse of enforcement mechanisms — allegations that the commission has firmly rejected.
Today’s rally underscores sustained civil society pressure for higher standards of transparency and accountability within Malaysia’s key institutions.
