PLUS traffic surges as Malaysians head home for Chinese New Year and Ramadan, delays reported from Klang Valley routes

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 14, 2026 – Traffic congestion along the North-South Expressway (PLUS) intensified from late morning today as thousands of Malaysians began travelling out of the Klang Valley ahead of the Chinese New Year celebrations and the upcoming Ramadan period.

As of 11am, vehicle volume towards the northern, southern and east coast routes had risen significantly, resulting in slow-moving traffic and expected delays across multiple key stretches of the highway network.

A Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) spokesperson confirmed that northbound traffic on PLUS was sluggish between Rawang and Sungai Buaya, Bukit Beruntung and Bukit Tagar, Slim River and Sungkai, as well as Sungkai to Bidor.

Traffic flow was also affected between Tapah and Gopeng and from the Menora Tunnel to Kuala Kangsar following an accident at kilometre 257.3 that led to lane narrowing. In the northern region, congestion was reported from Seberang Jaya to Sungai Dua.

Beyond the northbound route, heavy traffic conditions were observed from Senai Utara to Kulai, Simpang Renggam to Machap, and Senawang to Seremban.

Southbound and east coast motorists face similar delays

Southbound traffic was reported congested from Auto City to Juru Toll Plaza and along stretches from Bangi to Nilai, Nilai to Seremban, and Seremban to Senawang.

Motorists heading towards the east coast via the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway also experienced slow movement from Genting Sempah to Bukit Tinggi and onward to Lentang.

Authorities expect traffic volume to build further into the evening as many travellers opt to depart early to avoid last-minute festive congestion.

The overlap between Chinese New Year travel and preparations for Ramadan is believed to have contributed to the heavier-than-usual weekend traffic surge.

LLM advised motorists to plan their journeys carefully, monitor live traffic updates and ensure their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on long-distance travel.

Drivers were reminded to comply with speed limits, avoid using emergency lanes and remain alert, particularly near accident-prone areas and bottlenecks.

With a large-scale festive homecoming already underway, congestion is expected to persist into the night and potentially extend into tomorrow as peak travel continues.
