Missing Universiti Malaya Student Nawal Shahirah Found Safe, Receiving Psychiatric Treatment at HKL

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 1, 2026 — A student from Universiti Malaya, Nawal Shahirah Mohd Jamil, 23, who was previously reported missing, has been found safe and is currently receiving treatment at Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL).

Petaling Jaya district police chief Shamsudin Mamat said the student had voluntarily gone to the hospital to seek medical assistance before being confirmed to be in stable condition.

He said police checks with hospital authorities verified that Nawal Shahirah is undergoing psychiatric treatment and has been admitted for further monitoring.

“The individual admitted herself to the hospital on January 28 for treatment. Her condition is reported to be stable, and she remains under medical observation,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

Preliminary investigations revealed that she is believed to have experienced emotional distress following the recent passing of her mother, which may have affected her mental well-being.

Police believe the emotional strain prompted her to seek professional help, leading to her voluntary admission.

Earlier, Nawal Shahirah was reported missing after she was last seen at a condominium near Jalan Profesor Diraja Ungku Aziz in Section 14, Petaling Jaya.

Following the report, police launched a comprehensive investigation, including reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage in and around the residential area.

With her safety now confirmed, the search operation has been officially concluded. Authorities have also urged the public to refrain from spreading speculation that could interfere with her recovery process.
