Police Work with AGC to Strengthen Legal Measures Against Rising 3R Issues on Social Media
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 1, 2026 — The Royal Malaysia Police are intensifying discussions with the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) to strengthen legal mechanisms aimed at curbing the growing spread of race, religion, and royal institution (3R) issues on social media platforms.
Inspector-General of Police Mohd Khalid Ismail said the open nature of digital platforms has encouraged some users to express opinions freely without considering legal boundaries.
He noted that matters involving racism, religious sensitivities, incitement, and provocation remain persistent and continue to be key topics in discussions between the police and the AGC.
“Social media is extremely open. Everyone wants to comment, and sometimes those comments cross legal limits. In such cases, legal action becomes necessary,” he said.
Mohd Khalid was speaking to reporters after attending a community policing programme at the Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple in Batu Caves on Sunday.
He stressed that the police will continue to enhance online monitoring efforts to detect attempts to manipulate sensitive issues that could threaten public order.
According to him, the authorities will not tolerate content that promotes hatred, division, or social tension among different communities.
On another matter, Mohd Khalid said the investigation paper involving former Free Malaysia Today journalist Rex Tan will be submitted to the AGC in the near future.
So far, statements from five witnesses have been recorded, while further investigations may require additional testimonies.
Tan is being investigated over a controversial question he raised at a public forum comparing the situation in Palestine with the treatment of the Chinese community in Malaysia.
The IGP also revealed that two senior officers from a Chinese-language media organisation have been summoned to Bukit Aman to assist in investigations into an allegedly inaccurate translation of a royal address by Sultan Ibrahim published on January 19.
The case is being investigated under legal provisions related to public alarm and the misuse of communication facilities.
Mohd Khalid emphasised that firm, fair, and responsible enforcement is crucial to safeguarding social harmony in an increasingly complex digital environment.
