Opposition Seeks Government Explanation Over Azam Baki’s Appointment to National Financial Crime Centre
KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 — Opposition lawmakers have called on the government to explain the appointment of former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki to the National Financial Crime Centre (NFCC), saying the decision warrants greater public clarification.
Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said the government should provide the rationale behind the appointment, arguing that questions remain over issues that have previously placed Azam under public scrutiny.
Speaking at a press conference in Parliament, Hamzah said the administration should address concerns surrounding the decision to include Azam in the NFCC’s leadership structure.
“I want the government to explain the justification for appointing Tan Sri Azam as a member of the National Financial Crime Centre committee,” he said.
Hamzah added that, in his view, Azam had previously been associated with matters that had attracted investigations and public attention, making it important for the government to clarify the basis for the appointment.
Earlier reports said Azam had been appointed as an adviser to the NFCC, the national body responsible for coordinating efforts to combat financial crime and corruption across multiple enforcement agencies.
The appointment has generated public discussion, with some questioning whether individuals previously linked to high-profile controversies should hold advisory positions within institutions responsible for strengthening governance and combating financial crime.
One of the issues previously associated with Azam involved media reports concerning his shareholdings in a financial services company. The matter drew widespread public attention and prompted the establishment of a special task force to examine the allegations.
The Opposition’s latest remarks add to the debate over governance standards and appointments to key public institutions, with calls for greater transparency surrounding selections to bodies tasked with overseeing financial crime prevention and anti-corruption efforts.
