Smart Lane System Cuts Highway Congestion by Up to 50%, Parliament Told
KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 — Malaysia’s Smart Lane initiative has reduced traffic congestion on major expressways by between 30 and 50 per cent since its implementation in 2023, according to the Ministry of Works, which described the programme as an effective traffic management measure.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the initiative, implemented by the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM), has improved traffic flow along selected highway stretches while maintaining a strong safety record.
Addressing the Dewan Rakyat, Nanta said operational data collected since the programme began indicates that the Smart Lane system has successfully eased congestion during periods of heavy traffic.
“The Smart Lane initiative has consistently demonstrated its effectiveness, with congestion levels reduced by between 30 and 50 per cent across participating highway sections since 2023,” he said.
He added that accident rates within Smart Lane zones remain comparatively low when measured against the overall volume of vehicles using the routes, suggesting that the additional traffic management measures have not compromised road safety.
To further enhance operations, Nanta said the Ministry of Works and the Malaysian Highway Authority have incorporated artificial intelligence (AI) technology into highway monitoring systems.
The upgraded system uses AI-assisted closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras capable of monitoring traffic conditions in real time, allowing authorities to respond more quickly to congestion and manage traffic flow more efficiently.
According to the minister, the technology enables traffic controllers to make faster operational decisions while helping improve travel conditions for motorists.
He said the ministry also places significant emphasis on ensuring that Smart Lane operations continue to prioritise road safety and user comfort, including for motorcycle riders.
Nanta was responding to a question from Kangar MP Zakri Hassan, who sought clarification on the safety and convenience of implementing Smart Lane operations along several sections of the North-South Expressway (PLUS).
The ministry maintains that the initiative has delivered measurable improvements in highway traffic management while supporting safer and smoother journeys for road users across the affected expressway network.
