Man Arrested After Motorcycle Set Ablaze in Alleged Debt Dispute in Cheras

PETALING JAYA: Police have arrested a local man suspected of setting a motorcycle on fire in Cheras, with preliminary investigations indicating the incident was allegedly triggered by a dispute over outstanding debt.

The suspect, who is in his late 30s, was detained during a police operation conducted by officers from the Cheras District Police Headquarters (IPD Cheras). The arrest took place in front of a residence in Desa Pandan, Kuala Lumpur, at approximately 8.29 p.m. on Saturday.

According to Cheras District Police Chief ACP Rosdi Daud, investigators believe the suspect was involved in an act of arson involving a motorcycle at Flat Sri Johor in Cheras. The incident occurred at about 1.30 a.m. last week.

Initial investigations suggest the fire was allegedly motivated by an unresolved debt issue between the suspect and the motorcycle owner. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the dispute to establish the sequence of events leading to the incident.

Rosdi said the case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code, which relates to committing mischief by fire or explosive substance.

Following the arrest, the suspect was brought before the court, where investigators obtained a four-day remand order to facilitate further investigations. The remand is scheduled to end on 1 July.

Police are expected to continue recording statements and gathering evidence as part of the investigation. Authorities have not disclosed additional information regarding the amount of money involved in the alleged debt dispute or whether any further arrests are anticipated.

The case highlights how personal financial disputes can escalate into criminal investigations when property damage is involved. Police have reminded the public that disputes should be resolved through lawful means rather than actions that may endanger lives or result in damage to property.

Investigations remain ongoing, and authorities are expected to determine whether additional charges may be considered once the investigation is completed. As the inquiry progresses, police will continue examining all available evidence before submitting the investigation papers to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further action.
