Malaysia Backs US-Iran Talks, Calls for Immediate End to Military Operations in Lebanon
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has urged all parties involved in the ongoing conflicts in West Asia to implement an immediate ceasefire and allow diplomacy to take precedence following what it described as encouraging progress in recent negotiations between the United States and Iran in Switzerland.
Senator Datuk Dr. Mohd. Na’im Mokhtar said Malaysia welcomed the constructive atmosphere surrounding the first round of US-Iran talks held in Bürgenstock on June 21, expressing hope that the negotiations would pave the way for a lasting reduction in regional tensions.
According to him, several important outcomes from the discussions, including the establishment of a high-level joint committee, a 60-day roadmap towards a comprehensive agreement and Iran’s decision to readmit inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), were significant steps towards restoring confidence and stability.
“Malaysia welcomes these positive developments and urges both parties to honour the agreed 60-day timeline and continue the negotiations with sincerity and commitment.
“Diplomacy must be given every opportunity to succeed because lasting peace can only be achieved through dialogue and mutual understanding,” he said while addressing the 20th Session of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) in Baku, Azerbaijan today.
Mohd. Na’im said Malaysia firmly believes that diplomatic engagement remains the most effective avenue for resolving disputes and preventing further escalation in the region.
He noted that despite the encouraging progress in the US-Iran talks, Malaysia remains deeply concerned about the continued military activities in Lebanon, which threaten to undermine the fragile momentum towards peace.
“The conflict coordination mechanism and the Lebanon Ceasefire Implementation Forum agreed upon during the Switzerland negotiations must be activated immediately.
“These mechanisms are crucial to halting military operations and ensuring the safety and protection of civilians affected by the conflict,” he said.
Mohd. Na’im stressed that any provocative action or threats while peace negotiations are underway would only jeopardise ongoing diplomatic efforts and increase the risk of renewed hostilities.
He urged all parties to exercise restraint and avoid unilateral actions that could worsen the situation or trigger a broader regional conflict.
Malaysia, he said, remains committed to supporting peaceful initiatives and believes that regional stability can only be preserved when all stakeholders respect international law and engage in constructive dialogue.
Mohd. Na’im also highlighted the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure, describing the strategic waterway as a vital artery for global energy supplies and international trade.
He warned that any disruption to maritime traffic in the area could have far-reaching consequences on global oil markets, supply chains and economic stability.
“Malaysia believes that all maritime disputes should be resolved through established communication channels and mutually agreed mechanisms.
“Military action or unilateral measures are not sustainable solutions and will only heighten tensions in an already fragile region,” he said.
He reiterated Malaysia’s longstanding position that diplomacy is the only viable path to ending protracted conflicts in West Asia.
“Military confrontation does not benefit any side. Peace can only be achieved through dialogue, respect for sovereignty and strong regional cooperation,” he said.
Mohd. Na’im also called on member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to strengthen unity and speak with one voice in support of peace initiatives.
He urged OIC countries to intensify humanitarian assistance to civilians affected by conflicts in Iran, Lebanon and neighbouring areas, stressing that solidarity among Muslim nations is essential in addressing the humanitarian and security challenges facing the region.
As geopolitical tensions continue to shape global affairs, Malaysia, he said, remains steadfast in advocating peaceful solutions and promoting dialogue as the cornerstone of regional and international stability.
