Takdir Akhir: Last Dive Delivers Strong Message on Marine Conservation and Food Security
KUALA LUMPUR: Upcoming docu-film Takdir Akhir: Last Dive is drawing attention for its emotional and thought-provoking portrayal of marine ecosystem destruction and the growing importance of protecting ocean resources for future food security.
Produced by Produksi Seni 2020, the film explores various environmental issues including coral reef destruction, plastic pollution and the threats faced by marine life due to irresponsible human activities.
Through a combination of dramatic storytelling and documentary-style presentation, the film aims to educate audiences about the importance of preserving marine ecosystems that support both biodiversity and human livelihoods.
Deputy Director-General (Development) of the Malaysian Fisheries Department, Datuk Azahari Othman, said the film successfully highlights the serious consequences of environmental destruction on future food resources.
According to him, one of the most impactful scenes involved fish bombing activities that continue to occur in certain waters and cause severe damage to marine habitats.
He explained that such destructive practices not only kill fish indiscriminately but also destroy coral reefs that may take decades or even centuries to recover.
“Coral reefs play a vital role in marine ecosystems because they provide shelter and breeding grounds for numerous fish species.
“When these habitats are destroyed, the entire marine ecosystem is affected, including food resources relied upon by humans,” he said during the special preview screening.
Apart from fish bombing, the film also focuses on the issue of ghost nets — abandoned fishing nets left drifting in the sea that continue trapping marine animals.
Azahari said many turtles, fish and marine mammals die after becoming entangled in the discarded nets, making the issue increasingly alarming.
He stressed that efforts to remove ghost nets should be strengthened through cooperation involving non-governmental organisations, diving communities and private companies to better preserve marine ecosystems.
The film also raises awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution in coastal and marine areas.
According to Azahari, many marine animals, especially sea turtles, mistakenly consume plastic waste after confusing it with food sources such as jellyfish, often leading to fatal digestive complications.
“Public awareness is extremely important because marine pollution has long-term effects not only on the environment but also on national food sustainability,” he added.
Azahari also praised the film for successfully combining entertainment, educational value and environmental awareness into a production suitable for audiences of all backgrounds.
Among those attending the special preview screening were executive producers Datin Dr. Wendy Wong and Datuk Nancie Foo, along with renowned lyricist Datuk Habsah Hassan.
Several university lecturers and students from the National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (ASWARA) were also present at the event.
Takdir Akhir: Last Dive stars Shiqin Kamal, Aniq Dura, Fify Azmi, Amerul Affendi and former Miss Universe Malaysia Sandra Lim.
The film also features special appearances by Datuk Dr. Ras Adiba Mohd. Radzi and singer Fauziah Latiff, and is expected to premiere in cinemas nationwide soon.
