Flash Floods Sweep Across Klang Valley Following Intense Downpour
KUALA LUMPUR — Torrential rain that lashed the Klang Valley on Wednesday afternoon triggered flash floods in several parts of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, causing widespread traffic congestion and disrupting movement across major roads and highways.
The heavy rain, which began around 4pm, led to rising water levels in low-lying areas and key traffic routes during the evening rush hour.
Major Highways Affected by Floodwaters
Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia reported flash flooding along the Shah Alam Expressway at KM48.0 from Kinrara towards Awan Besar.
The flooding caused traffic to back up for almost four kilometres after water accumulated on parts of the highway.
Floodwaters were also reported along Jalan Kuchai Lama heading towards Jalan Klang Lama, while another flooded stretch near KM18.9 towards Maju Jaya resulted in one lane being partially submerged.
Traffic in affected areas slowed significantly as motorists navigated through waterlogged roads.
Petaling Jaya Food Court Hit by Flooding
In Petaling Jaya, floodwaters inundated a food court along Jalan 51A/223 in Section 51A after drains overflowed following the downpour.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department operations assistant director Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar said water levels at the location reached around 121 centimetres.
Several vehicles parked near the premises were reportedly submerged during the incident.
Authorities confirmed that no evacuation was carried out as the water had started receding when firefighters arrived.
Six personnel from the Balai Bomba dan Penyelamat Petaling Jaya were dispatched to monitor the situation.
Videos of Flooding Spread Online
Clips and photographs of flooded roads quickly circulated across social media platforms as residents documented worsening conditions around the Klang Valley.
One short video showed water pooling near the Bukit Jalil LRT station area, while other footage captured slow-moving traffic from Bukit Jalil towards Kinrara in Puchong.
Flooding was also reported along the Federal Highway near Petaling Jaya, contributing to heavier-than-usual congestion during peak travel hours.
MRR2 and KL-Seremban Highway Also Impacted
Traffic conditions deteriorated further along Middle Ring Road 2 near Desa Tun Razak due to water accumulation on several road sections.
Separately, a fallen tree near a Petron station along the southbound Kuala Lumpur–Seremban Highway blocked two lanes and added to traffic delays.
Authorities worked to remove the obstruction while monitoring weather conditions.
Public Advised to Stay Alert
Emergency responders and highway authorities have advised motorists to remain cautious and avoid flooded routes whenever possible.
The public was also urged to monitor weather developments closely as heavy rainfall and unstable conditions continue affecting parts of the Klang Valley.
