Shila Amzah Amazed by Lasting Fame in China as Comeback Tour Gains Momentum
KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 — Malaysian vocalist Shila Amzah has voiced her astonishment at the strong reception she continues to receive in China, where her recent comeback tour has drawn overwhelming support from fans old and new.
Despite spending years away from the market, the singer found herself still firmly in demand, with tickets for her concerts snapped up in under a minute — a response that underscores her enduring influence in the region.
Reflecting on the experience, Shila said she did not anticipate such a powerful comeback, especially after navigating a long journey in the entertainment industry that included rebuilding her presence overseas.
“I truly didn’t expect it. We had already started reconnecting with the audience there through smaller performances, but this tour allowed me to meet fans from many different cities,” she said.
She described the response as a meaningful reward after years of effort, attributing her renewed success to a supportive team and the presence of her husband, Ubai, who has been by her side throughout the process.
The achievement is particularly significant as Shila now operates as an independent artist, taking on greater responsibility in shaping her own career direction.
“As an independent artist, this means a lot. Even if only a small number of people support me, that’s enough motivation for me to keep going,” she said, emphasising her commitment to perseverance.
One of the most notable changes she observed is the shift in her audience profile. While her earlier fanbase in China consisted of older listeners, her current supporters are largely younger, with many aged between 18 and 25.
This transition has led her team to rethink their creative direction, ensuring her performances resonate with a younger generation while maintaining her musical identity.
To reconnect more personally with her audience, Shila has opted for smaller, more intimate concert settings rather than large-scale venues, allowing her to rebuild emotional connections with fans.
Her schedule remains packed as she balances preparations for a performance at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas with ongoing tour commitments in China, which are expected to continue until the end of the year.
She acknowledged that managing rehearsals and travel has been demanding, especially as she revisits Malay-language songs after a long gap.
Beyond the music, Shila has also been moved by the emotional connection she shares with her audience. She revealed that some fans in China have embraced her image, with a number expressing admiration for her choice to wear the hijab.
According to her, this response developed naturally and was never part of a deliberate branding effort.
“There are fans who become very emotional. Some even cry, but they remain respectful,” she said, noting the cultural sensitivity shown by her supporters.
Addressing differences in reception between Malaysian and Chinese audiences, Shila maintained that she does not prioritise one over the other, viewing music as a universal language that transcends borders.
“My passion stays the same wherever I perform. The energy I receive from the audience inspires me to give my best,” she added.
With plans underway to expand her tour to additional cities, Shila’s continued success highlights her ability to adapt, evolve and remain relevant in an ever-changing industry.
