UMNO Asserts Majority Edge in Negeri Sembilan, Aminuddin Opts to Continue Minority Rule

SEREMBAN, April 27 — United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) has declared that it now commands a simple majority in the Negeri Sembilan state assembly following support from lawmakers aligned with Perikatan Nasional (PN).

The development comes after five PN assemblymen signalled their readiness to cooperate with UMNO, adding to the party’s 14 seats and bringing the combined total to 19 — sufficient to form a majority in the Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN).

State UMNO chief Jalaluddin Alias described the move as a pragmatic step aimed at ensuring continuity in governance during a period of political uncertainty.

“In an extraordinary situation like this, the priority must be the welfare of the people. We are prepared to move beyond ideological differences to establish a stable administration,” he said.

He added that consolidating a majority bloc could provide a stronger platform for policy execution while preserving the state’s institutional and cultural framework.

Despite the shifting numbers, Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun maintained that his administration remains intact and capable of functioning, even as it transitions into a minority government.

He emphasised that such arrangements are not without precedent and remain permissible under existing legal provisions.

“There is no urgency to dissolve the state assembly at this point,” he said, noting that legislative sittings can be postponed for up to six months if necessary.

Aminuddin expressed confidence that the state government can continue administering effectively within that window, even amid evolving political dynamics.
