Negeri Sembilan Political Crisis Opens Door to Multiple Scenarios, Says Khairy
PETALING JAYA, April 27 — The political turmoil unfolding in Negeri Sembilan has created several possible outcomes, including the formation of a new state government, according to former Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar.
He said the current situation could lead to various configurations, such as a Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) alliance forming a new administration, or Pakatan Harapan (PH) handing over the Menteri Besar post to BN.
Khairy noted that under the present circumstances, Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun and the state assembly Speaker, both aligned with PH, are unlikely to allow a motion of no confidence to be tabled in the legislative assembly.
He suggested that PH may instead opt to continue governing as a minority administration or consider dissolving the state assembly to pave the way for fresh elections.
“Another possibility is the formation of a BN-PN coalition government, but that could face challenges in obtaining royal consent at Istana Seri Menanti, especially given the constitutional sensitivities surrounding the current crisis,” he said via a social media post.
Khairy also raised the scenario of PH relinquishing the Menteri Besar position to BN, though he believes that option may no longer be viable.
“At this stage, such a move could be perceived as a sign of weakness or desperation, as if PH had been forced out of leadership,” he added.
Describing the situation metaphorically, Khairy said UMNO appears to be in a “check” position in a game of chess, indicating a strategic but uncertain advantage.
The crisis was triggered after 14 BN state assemblymen announced their withdrawal of support and loss of confidence in Aminuddin’s leadership, throwing the stability of the state government into question.
