Azmin Slams Suspension of PN Assemblymen, Says Due Process Was Bypassed

SHAH ALAM, April 27 — Selangor opposition leader Mohamed Azmin Ali has criticised the suspension of two Perikatan Nasional (PN) assemblymen, arguing that the move reflects a failure to observe proper legislative procedures.

The controversy centres on a decision by Selangor State Assembly Speaker Lau Weng San to suspend Afif Bahardin and Mohd Rafiq Mohd Abdullah for three days after they attempted to bring a motion before the house.

The motion sought to refer Wong Siew Ki to the Committee of Privileges over remarks allegedly linked to the decree of Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah regarding pig farming regulations in the state.

Azmin contended that the Speaker’s decision to suspend the two lawmakers was premature and inconsistent with established procedures, which typically require such matters to be reviewed by the relevant committee before disciplinary action is considered.

“The intention was not to pass judgment or impose punishment, but to follow the standing orders by referring the matter for proper review. That process was not allowed to take place,” he said at a press conference.

He added that, as opposition leader, he had attempted to seek a reconsideration of the decision earlier in the day, but maintained that the ruling effectively curtailed the assemblymen’s right to raise procedural motions.

According to Azmin, the Committee of Privileges exists precisely to assess whether any breach of rules or decorum has occurred, and bypassing this step undermines institutional integrity.

The situation led to a temporary disruption in the assembly proceedings, with debates related to the motion of thanks for the royal address delayed by more than 20 minutes.

In response to the suspension, opposition assemblymen staged a coordinated walkout, describing it as a symbolic protest against what they viewed as an unjust decision.

Afif, speaking alongside Azmin, questioned the grounds on which his motion was rejected, saying the Speaker did not clearly identify which elements of the issue were considered insufficient or flawed.

He maintained that the matter had already been widely reported and was clear enough to justify further scrutiny by the committee.

Afif also raised concerns about consistency and transparency in the decision-making process, arguing that dismissing the motion without detailed justification could set a troubling precedent for future proceedings.

He emphasised that legislative processes must remain open and accountable, especially when dealing with sensitive matters involving institutional respect and public interest.

The episode has intensified debate within the Selangor assembly, with differing interpretations of procedural rules and the role of the Speaker in managing contentious issues.

Political observers note that such incidents highlight the delicate balance between maintaining order in legislative proceedings and ensuring fair representation of differing viewpoints.
