Azizulhasni Secures Bronze in Sprint at Track World Cup Nilai After Keirin Gold
NILAI, April 26 — Malaysia’s track cycling icon Azizulhasni Awang capped an impressive campaign at the Track World Cup 2026 by clinching the bronze medal in the men’s individual sprint at the Velodrom Nasional Malaysia.
The seasoned rider defeated Russia’s Nikita Kiriltsev in straight heats, winning 2-0 to secure his place on the podium. The victory underlined Azizulhasni’s consistency and tactical sharpness at the highest level of competition.
Fresh from his gold medal triumph in the keirin event a day earlier, the Malaysian veteran continued his strong form, showcasing his experience and race intelligence throughout the sprint competition.
His win in the bronze medal race required no decider, reflecting his control and composure against his opponent. The result also ensured he ended the tournament on a high note, adding another podium finish to his record.
Earlier in the day, Azizulhasni narrowly missed out on a place in the final after a closely fought semi-final against Nicholas Paul. He went down 1-2 in a competitive encounter that kept him out of the gold medal match.
The final saw reigning world champion Harrie Lavreysen assert his dominance, defeating Nicholas Paul 2-0 to claim the gold medal.
Despite the semi-final setback, Azizulhasni’s overall performance — highlighted by a gold in keirin and bronze in sprint — reaffirmed his status as one of the sport’s elite competitors.
The results also demonstrate that the “Pocket Rocketman” remains a formidable force on the international stage, continuing to deliver strong performances against some of the world’s best cyclists.
