‘Tangkap Azam Baki’ Rally Intensifies Calls for RCI as Fireworks Incident Sparks Sabotage Claims

KUALA LUMPUR, April 25 — Calls for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) grew stronger at the “Tangkap Azam Baki” rally, as participants alleged that a fireworks incident during the gathering was an attempt to disrupt a peaceful protest.

The incident occurred roughly 30 minutes after the rally began, when fireworks were set off near Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, close to the Sogo shopping complex.

Incident Viewed as Deliberate Disruption

Organisers and speakers described the act as a provocation aimed at undermining the orderly nature of the rally.

Muhammad Fakhrurrazi Khairur Rijal urged participants to remain calm and continue the march peacefully despite the disturbance.

Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz of Bersih called on authorities to identify those responsible and take firm action.

RCI Seen as Key to Restoring Trust

Speakers consistently emphasised the need for an independent RCI into allegations involving the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

They argued that such an inquiry is crucial to rebuilding public confidence in the institution.

Broad Political Backing

Former minister Rafizi Ramli highlighted the participation of representatives from various political parties, signalling cross-party concern over governance and integrity issues.

He also noted that police had requested organisers to conclude the rally earlier as a precautionary measure.

Push for Institutional Reform

Beyond the RCI demand, participants called for comprehensive reforms within MACC and stronger protections for freedom of expression in matters related to corruption.

These demands reflect growing pressure for greater transparency and accountability.

Peaceful Conclusion Despite Incident

Despite the fireworks incident, the rally proceeded in an orderly manner and ended peacefully near Dataran Merdeka.

Authorities confirmed the situation remained under control, while investigations are ongoing to identify those behind the disruption.
