Anwar Ibrahim Highlights 60% Rise in Penang Funding, Emphasises Targeted Development Strategy
BATU KAWAN, April 26 — Federal allocations for Penang have increased by nearly 60 per cent since 2022, reflecting a targeted development strategy aimed at accelerating growth in key regions, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said.
He stressed that the increase is part of a broader policy approach focused on strengthening economic hubs while maintaining national balance.
Gradual Increase Over Recent Years
After remaining below RM5 billion in 2021 and 2022, allocations to Penang began rising steadily.
The state received RM5.7 billion in 2023, RM5.8 billion in 2024, RM7.6 billion in 2025 and RM7.8 billion this year.
Anwar said the upward trend reflects both development priorities and economic planning considerations.
Infrastructure Investment as a Key Driver
Funding has been directed toward major infrastructure projects, including the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) and the Traffic Dispersal Project linking Juru and Sungai Dua toll plazas.
These initiatives are expected to improve connectivity, ease congestion and support long-term economic growth.
Balanced Approach Across States
The prime minister rejected claims that other states are being overlooked, emphasising that development spending has increased nationwide in line with government revenue growth.
Focus on Local Development Issues
Following the event, Anwar chaired a district-level development meeting in Seberang Perai Tengah, where discussions centred on infrastructure, economic expansion and community well-being.
Outcome-Oriented Policy Direction
He reiterated that government spending must deliver tangible benefits, ensuring that development initiatives contribute to sustainable growth and improved quality of life.
