Mat Sabu Highlights Malaysia–Vietnam Partnership as Key to Food Security Stability

KUALA LUMPUR: Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu has stressed that strong bilateral relations with Vietnam are essential in ensuring Malaysia’s food supply remains steady amid ongoing global disruptions.

During his official visit to Hanoi, Mohamad said the engagement is focused on reinforcing Vietnam’s role as a dependable supplier of staple food items, particularly rice, as international supply chains face mounting pressure.

Responding to global supply challenges

He pointed out that geopolitical tensions, especially those linked to developments in West Asia, have contributed to instability in global food distribution and pricing.

In response, Malaysia is adopting a more strategic and anticipatory approach to safeguard its food needs and reduce exposure to external shocks.

Strengthening networks and supply resilience

Mohamad said the government is working to broaden its network of food suppliers while strengthening long-standing partnerships to ensure consistent access to essential commodities.

He emphasised that such measures are crucial in maintaining resilience and continuity in the national food system.

“Our goal is to ensure that food remains accessible, sufficient and secure for all Malaysians,” he said.

Long-term commitment to food security

The minister reaffirmed that Malaysia will continue to prioritise food security through international collaboration and forward-thinking policies.

Upon arrival in Hanoi, he was welcomed by Malaysia’s ambassador to Vietnam, Tan Yang Thai, reflecting the importance of the visit in reinforcing bilateral ties.
