DBKL Eyes Immediate Water Management Measures After Unprecedented Bukit Lanjan Landslide

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is preparing urgent interventions in Kampung Bukit Lanjan after a rare landslide incident raised alarm among residents, with authorities proposing an on-site water detention system to curb both flooding and slope instability.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Fadlun Mak Ujud said the proposal was developed following a ground assessment aimed at identifying immediate and practical mitigation steps.

“Our priority was to evaluate how water behaves in the area during heavy rainfall and determine what early actions can be implemented,” he said.

Runoff management identified as critical

Findings from the site visit highlighted surface runoff as a key factor contributing to slope instability. Excess rainwater flowing unchecked across the terrain increases pressure on slopes, heightening the risk of landslides.

The proposed detention system is intended to temporarily hold and regulate water flow, reducing stress on vulnerable ground areas.

Fadlun stressed that effective water management is essential, particularly in hillside zones prone to rapid changes during intense rainfall.

Short-term action with long-term planning

DBKL is focusing on immediate mitigation while simultaneously developing a broader strategy that may include infrastructure upgrades and continuous monitoring.

The announcement was made during a community engagement programme attended by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh and Abdul Razak Abdul Majid.

Rare incident heightens public concern

Earlier this week, residents reported a landslide—the first in nearly three decades—prompting renewed concern over environmental risks in the area.

Authorities have indicated that further studies will be conducted to ensure both immediate safeguards and long-term solutions are effectively implemented.
