Malaysian Army Expands Recruitment Eligibility With Relaxed Age, Height And BMI Requirements
PORT DICKSON: The Malaysian Army has introduced a series of revised recruitment requirements aimed at attracting more Malaysians to military service while widening access for qualified candidates across the country.
Army chief Azhan Md Othman said the updated criteria include increasing the maximum entry age for new recruits from 25 to 30 years old, in addition to allowing applicants who wear spectacles to apply for military service.
Under the revised conditions, the minimum height requirement for male applicants has also been reduced from 1.62 metres to 1.57 metres, while the allowable Body Mass Index (BMI) threshold has been raised from 26.9 to 28.
According to Azhan Md Othman, the changes have already taken effect and form part of broader efforts to provide more opportunities for Malaysians who possess the necessary potential and qualifications to serve in the armed forces.
“These improvements are intended to expand opportunities for more Malaysians to join the army.
“However, every applicant will still undergo strict assessments and military training to ensure that only candidates who truly meet the standards of the army are selected,” he told reporters after attending the Passing-Out Parade for Young Male Recruits Series 205/25 in Port Dickson today.
He stressed that while increasing recruitment numbers is important, the army’s main priority remains maintaining quality, professionalism and operational readiness across all Corps and Regiments within the organisation.
Azhan Md Othman said the revised approach reflects the army’s commitment towards becoming a more inclusive, progressive and sustainable military force without compromising combat capability and professional standards.
He expressed confidence that the updated recruitment conditions could increase applications by between 10 and 20 per cent.
According to him, the army currently receives more than 10,000 applications annually, but following health screenings and preliminary assessments, only around 3,000 applicants successfully meet the required standards for enlistment.
In a related development, the Malaysian Army is also planning to strengthen female participation within the military as part of future organisational and capability development strategies.
Several specialised areas have been identified to expand opportunities for women, particularly in roles that can contribute towards operational effectiveness and force readiness.
“The recruitment intake for female soldiers will reopen in July with an estimated intake of about 350 recruits.
“This process will be implemented in a structured manner according to current and future organisational requirements,” he said.
At the same time, the army has reaffirmed its support for efforts by the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) to address bullying and abuse within military institutions through the establishment of a dedicated Anti-Bullying Task Force.
Azhan Md Othman said the army has already formed a monitoring team after identifying that many bullying and abuse incidents tend to occur outside official working hours.
He added that awareness programmes are also being strengthened to educate military personnel about bullying prevention and encourage healthier methods of resolving disputes without violence or intimidation.
“In the long term, a special committee has also been established to monitor the issue comprehensively and identify weaknesses as well as areas requiring improvement in handling bullying cases among military personnel,” he said.
He added that all three branches under the Malaysian Armed Forces are currently reviewing bullying and abuse cases recorded since 2022 in order to identify recurring patterns and formulate more effective prevention strategies.
According to him, disciplinary action has already been taken against more than 10 officers and military personnel for various misconduct offences, including dismissals from service.
Meanwhile, Azhan Md Othman confirmed that a military officer involved in a fatal road accident in Kuala Lumpur last month is currently undergoing procedures for termination of his Short Service Commission.
He also revealed that a corporal linked to an assault case resulting in the death of a private in Bentong, Pahang, had officially been dismissed from service on May 13.
