Aerospace and High-Tech Industries Expected to Drive Sarawak’s Economic Transformation

KUCHING: Sarawak sees the aerospace and high-technology sectors as among the key drivers capable of transforming the state’s economy in the future.

Sarawak Governor Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the development of these sectors has the potential to create more high-skilled employment opportunities while offering more competitive income levels for the people of the state.

According to him, the aerospace industry extends beyond aircraft component manufacturing and also covers satellite technology, aircraft maintenance, drone technology and the digital economy.

“Aerospace covers various strategic industries including satellite technology, drones, aircraft maintenance and the digital economy.

“With sufficient education and training, I believe Sarawakians will be able to compete internationally and position Sarawak as a respected aerospace and high-technology hub in the region,” he said.

He made the remarks while officiating the opening ceremony of the First Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 19th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly in Kuching today.

Also present was Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg.

In the same speech, Wan Junaidi said infrastructure development remains a major priority for the state government in efforts to strengthen connectivity and enhance economic growth.

He said projects such as bridge construction, coastal highways, the Sabah-Sarawak Link Road and road connections to Brunei are expected to shorten travel times while creating broader economic opportunities for the people.

According to him, the establishment of state-owned airline AirBorneo is also viewed as a strategic move to strengthen domestic and regional aviation networks.

He said AirBorneo is expected to improve flight access to Sarawak, including interior regions, while helping to stimulate the state’s tourism sector.

He also expressed hope that the airline would contribute towards stabilising air travel costs to Sarawak, which has long been a concern among travellers.

Meanwhile, Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Speaker Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar previously announced that the current sitting would also include the tabling of the Sarawak Rice and Paddy Board Bill 2026.

The bill is among four legislative proposals scheduled to be tabled during the eight-day session as part of efforts to strengthen food security and further develop the state’s rice and paddy industry in a more structured manner.
