Unusual Storm Paths and Warmer Seas Raise Alarms for Future Extreme Weather

SINGAPORE: Climate scientists are warning that more regions could face extreme weather events as warming oceans allow storms to form in new areas and follow unfamiliar paths.

Cyclone Senyar’s development in the Malacca Strait was described as highly unusual, with some experts noting it may be only the second storm on record to make landfall in Malaysia from the west.

The study estimates that climate-driven increases in extreme rainfall could range from 9 to 50 per cent in the Malacca Strait and from 28 to as high as 160 per cent in Sri Lanka.

Researchers also pointed to rapid deforestation as a key factor worsening floods and landslides, stressing that climate adaptation and environmental protection must go hand in hand to reduce future disaster risks.
